Even the finale's attempt to visually impress the audience falls short: Nanoha and her friends' weaponry gets fancier with each transformation, but the digitally-generated effects are woefully cheap, and the artifact/creature designs just get stupid by about Episode 12 or so. But maybe the flash and fanfare of mid-air magical combat (yes, every magic-wielding person in this series can fly; it just looks cool) isn't so bad compared to what happens on the ground: blocky front-view or side-view scenery, uninspired backgrounds, and animation so cheap that there is one scene where a TV is flashing static images every two seconds. But lazy directing and cheap animation have nothing to do with the most intrinsic visual problem: the dull, bug-eyed character designs that differ only in terms of hairstyle and costume changes. And even then, everyone has that weird tuft of hair coming out the side of their heads! Is this some kind of bizarre universe where everyone wakes up with bed head in the mornings?

What a relief, then, that the music isn't quite as cheap as the visuals: sure, they still use electronic instrumentation because it's a pain to bring in real musicians, but the pretend-orchestra that pounds its way through the soundtrack is surprisingly effective. Battle scenes resound with Wagnerian pomp, while quiet moments and flashbacks are dotted with poignancy—especially in Fate's dream about her perfect alternate world. Too bad the theme songs are so dull in comparison (and this is why Nana Mizuki and Yukari Tamura have never quite broken the barrier between singing seiyuu and actual pop star).

If this volatile stew of genre elements seems strange, though, it does become more palatable as the heart of the storyline is revealed. The knights' true motives come into the open, the Book of Darkness's background is made clear, and the true villain of the story—believe it or not—evokes a deeper sympathy than any of the heroes. (Or maybe that's just another cliché taking effect.) Where it would have been so easy to go with the cackling nutcase bent on world domination, this series actually tries to paint the good-versus-evil conflict in deep shades of gray, resulting in a far more bittersweet emotional effect than one might expect from the genre.

But a magic-infused action-adventure must, in the end, deliver action and adventure, and that's where things fall back into the realm of the predictable. The middle episodes feature a lot of sloppy stop-and-start battles, with the knights charging forward and then rearing back as they suddenly become torn between their thirst for destruction and the love of their master. And when it comes down to fighting the final battle—a longwinded four-episode affair (in a 13-episode series!)—everyone just trots out increasingly powerful attacks, usually accompanied by monologues about the strength of their heart and the force of their will. Nanoha A's may have subverted the traditional villain role, but apparently it couldn't think up anything original for the heroes.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's can be faulted for many things—a chaotic beginning, a time-stalling middle, an overly drawn-out ending—but one thing it can never be accused of is having a generic, sneering, cackling, Big Bad villain. That's because this series does everything it can to avoid that stereotype, hiding the real enemy within a matryoshka doll of plot twists and revelations. As a sequel series, the pressure to outdo the the original must have been intense: "Actually, Fate isn't the real villain!" just would not do as a plot device anymore, and they had to go bigger and better, and throw in a couple of heart-wrenching moral dilemmas for good measure. The result is a work of raw ambition, desperately straining to break free of the clichés holding it down. To its credit, Nanoha A's comes close. Very close.

Even the title of this series belies its true nature: if anything, Nanoha A's is more of a pure action-adventure that simply uses magical-girl tropes and cuts out the filler. And so it is with the opening arc: Nanoha gets beaten to within an inch of her life in Episode 1, Fate has to fight in her place for almost all of Episode 2, and then it's another whole episode just to explain what the heck is going on. Clearly, familiarity with the original series helps a lot, because the recap ("I was an ordinary third-grader until...") barely counts as one. And don't ask what spaceships and cartridge-loading weapons and computer science mumbo-jumbo have to do with magical combat; this is one of those series where "because it looks cool" is justification enough for anything.

As a school comedy, the dialogue is pretty light and easygoing throughout the book, and some of the best lines come from the characters taking jabs at each other. (The "convince Kumiko to come along to the pool" sequence is particularly well-timed.) However, the translation occasionally ends up with strange word choices and awkward turns of phrase; these little hiccups can be distracting at times. Sound effects are also handled in a haphazard manner, as some are deleted and replaced with English equivalents, while others are left as part of the artwork with translations placed nearby. A glossary of translation notes in the back is something of a half-hearted effort, with only four entries, but the story isn't too culture-dependent anyway.

It's probably just as well that Kamisama Kazoku doesn't dig too deep into the philosophical implications of being a deity; that's not something easily covered in manga, much less any other medium. Instead, the first volume spends most of its time on something with a greater chance of success: fun, lightweight bursts of comedy that just happen to involve the big man in the sky. A touch of romantic desire and conflict doesn't hurt, either. But doing the little things and doing them well is only the start; this series has yet to prove why its storyline is any better than the rest of the genre. So forget the big questions like the existence of a higher power and the meaning of life—the real thing you might want to ask yourself is, do you like wacky romantic school comedies enough to keep on reading?

Still, the quick pacing of the story helps to keep things moving; if one joke doesn't click, there's probably another decent one a few pages further. In between are some surprising moments of tenderness as well, as Samataro starts to develop feelings of love and longing, while Tenko finds herself fighting the pangs of jealousy. But these emotional explorations are just as lightweight as the quick-and-easy humor, adding up to a first volume that hasn't committed to a serious storyline yet. In fact, the most serious development is the one that comes in the final three pages of the book, and readers may find themselves trying to make the tough call of whether Volume 2 is worth picking up for this sudden turn of events, or if this is just cliffhanger trickery. After all, a proper school-romance storyline has to be built on more than just random acts of God...

Wherever things are headed next, though, the artwork manages to keep up with the story's changing tone. Bold, energetic movements and outgoing facial expressions dominate the comedy scenes, of which there are many; these often also involve an appealing-but-not-too-distracting level of fanservice. On the flip side, the images seem to almost slow down in time when it comes to moments of longing or jealousy—suddenly it goes from several minutes of action per page to just a few seconds of inward self-reflection, which shows a surprisingly good command of pacing. Clean lines and rectangular paneling also help to keep things highly readable. Yet for all these technical accomplishments, there isn't much visual creativity to be found—the character designs and backgrounds all lean toward the bland and mainstream, and the toning and texture create something of a flat, gray-on-white look.

What comes to mind when one mentions "religious themes"? Giant robots fighting over the end of the world where everything is named after Judeo-Christian terminology, maybe? Or vampire hunters in the employ of the Vatican? But what probably would not come to mind is a romantic comedy where the main gimmick involves a caricatured interpretation of the traditional monotheistic God-with-a-capital-G. Kamisama Kazoku definitely hits "only in Japan" levels of originality with that quirk, and it even nonchalantly plays the "Son of God" card without mentioning a certain carpenter from Galilee. But does it work as an actual romantic comedy? While it gets a lot of the little things right, it remains to be seen whether this story can rise above the genre's standards.

Volume 1 is quick to establish a simple formula for comedy: Samataro gets into a scrape, Dad reads his thoughts and waves an omnipotent finger, and madness ensues. When applied creatively, it leads to some wonderfully off-beat moments—a teacher suddenly going nuts, or an accident being miraculously averted. Add in Samataro's similarly powerful sisters, and more variations emerge, like the madcap outcomes of an "emotional roulette wheel." Yet that same formula can be eye-rollingly predictable as well, like when Samataro meets Kumiko after and she instantly decides to strip for him (and right away you can tell which demographic this series is geared toward).

Call me a pervert, but I was really looking forward to 30-sai no Hoken Taiiku. A guide to sex and hygiene for 30 year old virgins? It's ironic and brilliant on so many levels. But bad news travels fast, and the second it came out, the internet exploded in anger from Japanese television viewers complaining that the series was censored beyond comprehension. Normally I take fan rage with a heap of salt, but in this case, the outrage is understandable and warranted.

The first five seconds of the show are wildly hilarious. A nerd in mismatched socks is swooning at a scratched out figure of a woman, stretched seductively on his bed with her rear in the air. Or at least that's what I think she's doing. I'm not really sure because nothing is actually shown except for angry pink scribbles in the shape of a woman. But I have an active imagination, and so it was still great. Then after another five seconds, I realized that not only was the woman scrawled out, but every single gag in the show was replaced by squiggles.

Their mystical land is so dreamy that every single scene is perpetually washed in white, so that everything is one hazy blur of pink and purple. Our heroine is Lady Lotte, a sassy but cute succubus with a strangely charming spade-shaped tail. Even at the tender age of 10, she knows that the purpose of her kind is to suck out the life-seed of men, which viewers are led to believe is a not-at-all veiled euphemism for fellatio. Upon learning that the queen was renowned for having a harem of men from all walks of creaturedom—except human—Lotte decides, naturally, that she wants a human boy for herself. And lo, one is whisked from Earth, and I'm sure hijinks ensue.

I've gotten to a jaded point in my life where I can watch just about any trainwreck of an anime and think, “Well, this isn't that bad.” And the same is true of Astarotte's Toy. It's banal, yes. It's trite, yes. It's frivolous, yes, yes. And it's basing its entire premise on the allegedly gut-busting idea that there is a perky succubus who is about to wreak havoc on some poor milquetoast's life, even though she thinks boys are icky. It's clichéd to the point of almost being a parody of itself, if only it were that self-aware. But in the end, it's not the worst thing I've ever seen. It's just a waste of time.

As I started watching Astarotte's Toy, I kept waiting for the camera to zoom out to reveal that whatever I was watching was actually a show being watched by other anime fans, a la Kujibiki Unbalance in Genshiken. I felt sure that at any moment, the pastel pink nonsense would pause, and a snaggle-toothed nerd with saliva dripping out of his mouth would turn to the camera and say, “I love what the director's done with little Lotte-chan.” I waited, and waited. And waited some more. But the show never paused.

I was convinced that Astarotte's Toy was a fake anime, because I thought that in this day and age, such cookie-cutter fluff was the stuff of legends, the kind of show that tongue-in-cheek directors poked fun at when they satirized their own medium. But apparently there is still a market for this, just as there will always be a market for Kleenex, and a market for Jergens.

In contrast, the two main (human) characters are drawn very normally. They have facial expressions, to be sure, but only within the range of normal emotions. It's vastly different from the crazy client or Azazel, whose face contorts at the slightest provocation, to the point where they seem like transplants from a different series. Once you get used to it, it works perfectly, as it makes it clear that the two main characters really aren't the focus of the show—they're just the vehicle for the jokes. If the rest of the series is anything like the first episode, it'll be one of the best comedies this year.

Not everyone can sign a contract with a demon who's both powerful and competent. Sometimes you get stuck with a B-team demon, who'd rather spend his time sleeping and sweet talkin’ the ladies. Such is Azazel, a winged, lion-faced, satyr-like, porky little chump of a demon who finds himself contracted to the head of a private detection agency. He's lazy and foul-mouthed, but he makes Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san worth watching. Compared to all the other dozens of demon-contracting shows out there, this one's a breath of fresh air.

With only half the runtime of a typical episode, Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san relies heavily on visual humor to deliver its laughs. The first case involves a woman who's tired of her husband cheating on her. She's portrayed as a high-strung hag, who looks somewhat like a cross between Olive Oyl and Jigsaw. She bugs her eyes, gnashes her teeth, and twists her face into that of a violent old man, as she crams wads of paper into her gaping maw. Later, after some abracadabra by Azazel, she inherits a pair of gargantuan breasts that swing with the elasticity of water balloons. It's incredibly hard to describe with just words, but it's those kinds of scenes that make the series really fun to watch. The show is truly bizarre, and the punch lines are always unexpected.

Based on a manga by TAGRO, Hen Zemi does have an animated precedent—a five-episode OVA that was released last summer. Only in the OVA, the seminar assignments went so far as to have the students film each other fornicating. So, I guess if you compare it to that, the TV series is relatively vanilla. And by vanilla, I mean that the students aren't banging each other yet for extra credit. Yet. They're just touching each other, talking about smelling their own bathtub farts, and writing papers in a class taught by a man who is clearly some kind of sexual offender.

I think Hen Zemi is supposed to be a comedy. I say “think” because, beyond my brain's refusal to accept any part of the story's premise as logical possibility, I personally don't see the inherent humor in taking a course where students are encouraged to post pictures of each other's nether-regions on the Internet. Call it moral decency, or just “standards,” but Hen Zimi is trash of the basest level. Or maybe I just didn't “get it.”

What kind of accredited university teaches a freshman seminar that encourages students to grow flies in their ears, and asks them to explore and experience strange sexual fetishes? Or allows students to sexually harass each other while the professor leers nearby? Apparently whatever hack university is in Hen Zemi, a 12-minute comedy about college students enrolled in an “Abnormal Physiology Seminar.” Or, as laymen would call it, hentai class. Most of the freshman taking the class embrace their own perversions—there's a camera voyeur, an honor student who literally salivates at the mere thought of erotic touching, a cuckold fetishist, and a couple of others. But of course, there's also the sweet innocent girl who's only taking the class because she has a crush on the cuckolder. Hey, if they get together by the end of the series, she'll be in for a surprise or two!

Though that still doesn't answer the question of why this class is allowed to exist, or why this professor still has a job, or why this university is accredited. Let's just drop all the pretenses, do away with this ridiculous “college” scenario, and just call the show HEY PERVERTS!

Toriko could be the most ridiculous show this season. And it's awesome. It has the ludicrousness of a Nicholas Cage film, combined with the sense of exaggerated bravado that makes shonen fighting series so fun to watch. It's so ridiculous that the entire opening theme song is guttural grunts of how great it is to chomp and eat. It's a show that fully embraces the stereotypes of its genre and refuses to be taken seriously. And how could it be? Toriko is, quite literally, a show about a guy with muscles that punches food. Let me repeat that—the entire show is about a guy that punches animals.

It goes without saying that if you're sensitive about where your food comes from, you might be a little uncomfortable cheering on a protagonist whose sole goal in life is to hunt and eat every animal in existence, in search of his perfect menu. But if you can look past that and just recognize the absurdity in the story, then you'll have a good time. Plus if it's any consolation, Toriko does eat every part of the animal.

The series has basically two moods—sad and silly—and first-time anime composer Shigeomi Hasumi handles both, and several gradations between the two, with a smooth deference that belies his inexperience. Highly enjoyable and surprisingly sensitive, it heightens feelings and subtly bolsters humor without ever drawing undue attention to itself. As good a start to an anime music career as one could want.

It's hard not to be a little bitter that the series doesn't live up to the power and promise of its perfectly formed pilot. But even if the remainder of the show feels like a sequel to its first episode, at least it's a fun sequel. There's plenty to enjoy here: likeable characters, laugh-aloud jokes, and over it all a faint pall of heartbreak to temper its rampant lightheartedness. To ask more, even given the knowledge that it is indeed capable of more, seems a bit churlish.

But not lethal. Even after taking several steps down, Sasameki is still a couple of steps above your average romantic comedy. It never completely loses its melancholy edge, secreting little emotional stings like razor blades in its big blocks of laid-back humor. It also doesn't flinch away from the isolation its quartet of girl-loving girls feel thanks to their sexuality, nor does it hide the perverse (and perversely entertaining) undercurrents of some of its humor (Akemiya's gender confusion in particular). But most importantly, it knows how to have a good time without wearing out its welcome. Neither spastically overzealous nor dully complacent, whether chronicling a Geneva-Convention-defying cooking contest or Sumika's ditz training (lesson one: how to slip on a banana peel), it can paste an effortless smile on your face that won't fade until long after the end credits roll.

The series shoots for a simple, solid look that complements its modest ambitions well. It's blessed with good, though not spectacular, background artistry that delineates spaces and sets moods without being obtrusive or flashy. Character designs are distinguishable without being distinguished, cute and suitably expressive, but with inflexible, detail-deprived hair and generalized, slightly cartoony faces. It's limited scope requires little from its animators—nothing more active than, say the inevitable reckoning with that aforementioned banana peel—and they rarely invest more than absolutely necessary. Which is perfectly fine, especially given that the series is at its most distinctive and effective when pinching pennies with its unique and very funny brand of SD humor.

In the meantime the secondary cast gets top-loaded with characters that qualify more as comic complications than integral parts of the series. The antics of cross-dressing classmate Akemiya and floridly lesbian lovers Tomoe and Miyako are so relentless and ubiquitous that even level-headed Sumika gets caught up in them, acquiring a pretty serious patina of goofiness in the process. It's the performance of a series that has been left unexpectedly rudderless, and after the excellence of its inaugural episode, the disappointment is palpable.

It's fairly common for manga, particularly yuri manga it seems, to come by serialization by accident. The author will write a one-off story, which by a twist of fate or raw talent proves popular enough that they are called on to revisit it on a continuing basis and wham! You have a serial. Sasameki Koto feels like one of those accidents.

Its first episode is a hard-polished gem of doomed romance, an autonomous study of interwoven affections that describes, in less than thirty minutes and with perfect conviction, a complex and achingly sad relationship. It's an amazingly tight and accomplished little work, as much a short film as a pilot episode. With economical strokes it paints a lonely yet lovely picture of a girl whose need to hide her feelings has placed her in an untenable emotional position. The characters are gracefully sketched, their emotions convoluted yet painfully comprehensible, and their romantic entanglements all too real. And it's all—plot, cast, and emotions; pointedly unresolved though they may be—beautifully, seamlessly self-contained.

Geneon turned to Bang Zoom! for the English dub, which was scripted and directed by voice actor Patrick Seitz (who also voices Dhaos). The English script remains faithful enough that it shouldn't provoke much complaint, with the only noticeable error being a substantial discrepancy between the dub and subtitles on the number of enemy forces at one point. Most of the principal English vocals hit the mark, with Jennifer Sekiguchi turning in another sterling performance in impressively capturing Arche's pitch and playful spirit; yes, this is the same VA who did such a wonderful job as Guu in Haré+Guu. The one weak point in key roles is David Vincent's occasionally stiff performance as Chester, but it isn't a major detriment.

All of the on-disc Extras are standard fare: clean opener and closer, company previews, and a substantial art gallery. Both the inside of the cover and an additional insert contain bonus artwork.

Spreading the story out over a couple more episodes may have allowed for a smoother-flowing story and greater character development, but the series does pack enough action and pleasing visuals to keep a viewer's interest, and its soundtrack may be worthy of independent purchase. It is an entertaining, if forgettable, production.

The musical score heavily borrows and adapts themes from across a wide range of fantasy and action movies and games, as well as other fantasy and sci-fi anime titles; veteran fans could almost make a game of identifying what theme originates from where. It certainly does its job at reinforcing the tone of any given scene, although it sometimes comes across too strongly in key drama and action scenes. Its theme songs, both beautifully performed by seiyuu Masami Suzuki, deserve special mention. The opener “Yume no Hate” sounds like what you'd get if you crossed certain selections from the soundtracks of Titanic and Conan the Barbarian and added Japanese vocals to it, but it works extremely well and is as perfectly-synched with its visuals as any opener in recent memory. The closer “Priere” is a more purely graceful and soaring love song, but while its visuals are more ordinary it is nonetheless the equal in vocal quality of the opener. The plot also has a bad habit of jumping around a lot, and the concept of transition scenes seems foreign to the production; it just flat-out skips ahead to the next critical moment, without showing at all how the characters got there. This is, of course, a reflection of the content being assembled from highlight scenes from throughout the game, but other game adaptations have shown that it all can be put together with a much better flow than it has. And what's the deal with the weird naming conventions? A character named Mint? And how can you take seriously a series with a character named Claus T. Lester?

No fan of the game could be disappointed with the visuals, which beautifully portrays key cast members with well-rendered designs that may be cut from standard fantasy molds but are sharp nonetheless. A vivid palette of colors and nice background art contributes to the visual appeal, although it often seems like some kind of filter has been place over the artwork to mute the colors somewhat. Magical effects are suitably flashy, as is the animation in battle scenes, although inconsistencies can be seen in some scenes where Arche is flying around on her broom. The action/violence graphic content remains at a PG-13 level, and nary a hint of fan service is to be seen anywhere.

And yet, despite all the growing Takumi does, this season still feels like a step down, both from what comes before and what follows. Why is that? Ironically, because Takumi does all that growing. While impressive, Takumi's dark night of the soul isn't as impressive as his races. The hard truth is that neither growth nor character, much less teen drama or romantic heartbreak, is what Initial D is about. Initial D is about racing, nothing more. Anything that distracts from that, no matter how solidly done, is to the show's detriment. And unfortunately, Takumi's evolution distracts, and mightily. Aside from a few who-cares side battles there are only three real races in the entire season, and one of them—the mid-season climax—is so laden with non-race dramatic baggage that it never really takes off before it comes crashing to an end. That's a big problem. Racing is Initial D's lifeblood, and without it the show is a shadow of the pulse-pounding adrenaline monster that it is at its street-racin' best.

That is nowhere so clear as during the two races that do take off. Carefully built to and tensely staged, they're two immense testosterone highs in a season too often marked by emotional lows. The first is a classic beat-the-bad-guys battle and the second a cathartic blowing off of a long-building head of steam, and like the best of the series' races each one has you screaming downhill right along with Takumi and his scrappy little tofumobile. It's hard not to chafe when the show turns away from that to wallow in Takumi's personal life. The extra depth is nice, but deep down we don't want to see Takumi mature or triumph over adversity. We want to see him hit the road and peel out in a puddle of some punk's leftover pride.

If four episodes of Witchblade just isn't enough, there's a healthy dose of extras on this disc, with a 17-minute featurette on the background of the original Witchblade comic and an interview with voice actress Mie Sonozaki (who plays Reina in the series). However, the interview does contain spoilers, so it's best watched after the main content. Other goodies include textless opening and ending sequences, and an insert booklet containing production art and an interview with conceptual designer Shinya Ogura.

There may have been a time when the Witchblade anime was only about torpedo-chested women battling it out, but that time is now gone, as this set of episodes takes a deeper, more introspective turn. The relationship between Masane and Riko is tested to its limit here, and indeed, the whole idea of mothers and daughters is explored in the climactic episode—with bittersweet results. After such dramatic heights, the filler-ish beach episode is a bit of a letdown, and it would be nice if we could just wish away the horrid second opening theme. Despite those weaknesses, however, these episodes still leave a strong impression—especially since few things are as strong as the power of parental love.

Music runs a wide range throughout these episodes, from lighthearted pop tracks to more serious instrumental pieces during the show's most dramatic moments. Solo piano ballads set the right mood for Masane's grief over losing Riko, and a string ensemble provides the bittersweet background when she learns about her forgotten past. The pleasant chords of the ending song also help to reset emotional equilibrium after each episode, but there's just no forgiving the new opening theme that plays from Episode 14 onwards—this aural monstrosity features ridiculous English lyrics and a sound that doesn't fit the series' action/sci-fi feel at all.

The English dub is competently done on this round of episodes, especially with the high number of emotionally charged scenes. During certain quiet moments, the characters deliver their lines almost too slowly and deliberately—perhaps to match the mouthflaps?—but the emotion and feeling is always there. More fast-paced dialogue turns out fine, though, especially with Maria's rampage in Episode 15—if any aspiring voice actor wants to hear how an epic meltdown is done, just check out that episode. The dub script tends to wander loosely from the subtitle translations, but essential lines of dialogue never lose their meaning, even though the Japanese and English words may differ.

Animation and visuals are reasonably polished in this set of episodes, although the quality varies depending on the complexity of the scene. Critical moments—like the Cloneblade battle in Episode 15 or the split-second where Masane takes off her shirt at the beach—are handled with high framerates and plenty of detail, while lesser scenes like a casual conversation at the café are dialed down to merely adequate levels. Character designs are similarly hit-or-miss: Masane in full battle gear is rendered right down to the last curlicue on her Witchblade outfit, and Riko is drawn to maximum levels of cuteness, while secondary characters like Segawa or Chou get a more simplified, caricatured treatment. The backgrounds, which cover a variety of post-apocalyptic Tokyo locales, generally have a shiny futuristic look—although maybe too shiny, as they often end up flat and lacking in detail. Organic backgrounds turn out a little better, though—the beach in Episode 16 is fairly convincing, and the forest that provides the setting for the climax of Episode 15 is richly rendered, especially with the sunset in the emotional final scene.

Because of that convergence of storylines, most would agree that Episode 15 is the highlight of this disc: shocking plot points, running for one's life, an intense one-on-one battle, and a deeply emotional finish that gets the pacing and tone just right. It's in this episode that the theme of "mothers and daughters" is brought to its apex: not just for the drama between Masane and Riko, but also for the other mother and daughter characters who meet a less favorable end. By comparison, the last episode on the disc is pretty much a time-waster—in an anime with so many busty women, you just have to squeeze in a beach episode somewhere. It's a refreshing break from the seriousness of the previous story arc, but let's not kid ourselves here: it's basically an excuse to see Masane in a bikini about two sizes too small, and nothing more.

The English dub is excellent, and although the folks at Disney have no more need to prove they can provide wonderful dubs, this one feels a bit stronger than some of their previous work. The performances are very natural; it doesn't “feel” like a dub at all. Fans worried about gimmicky Disney Channel casting – namely the youngest Jonas brother, Frankie, as the lead, and Miley Cyrus' little sister, Noah, as Ponyo – can rest easy, because they do an excellent job sounding like kids without getting irritating, keeping the big dramatic emotions properly in check while still exuding childlike enthusiasm. Their performances are expertly tailored to the characters. Other venerable regulars, like Liam Neeson as the wizard Fujimoto and Cate Blanchett as the sea goddess, are great, in a shock to no one.

Special mention must be made of Tina Fey, who voices Lisa. It is a marvelous performance and not at all what many might have expected from the comic actress, most famous for 30 Rock and her days on Saturday Night Live. It feels flawless; probably the best vocal performance I've ever heard in a Ghibli dub (or any other dub, for that matter). It eschews completely Fey's comic persona and instead brings the character to life as a wholly realistic and at times remarkable parent.

Watch enough comedy anime and you'll swear that they all use the exact same background music—all except for Doki Doki School Hours, which breaks the mold and goes for a lighthearted orchestral sound. Just when everything seemed to have been synthesized and honky-tonked to death, composer Yoshihisa Hirano proves that it's still possible to write an original-sounding score for a comedy. The theme songs, meanwhile, are outbursts of pure energy, matching the cheerful mood of the show.

A series about everyday school life calls for everyday voices, and sure enough, the dub track features none of the English-speaking "superstars" of voice acting. Whether this was a conscious casting decision or not, the result is an honest, natural-sounding performance, just like regular schoolkids. The cast's inexperience also has its disadvantages, however—many of the lines sound stiff, and everyone uses the same tone of voice. For more vocal variety, switch to the Japanese audio. The adaptation from subtitles to dub script is most concerned with the flow of words; although it tries to be faithful where it can, there are some figures of speech that come out more easily if converted to something else entirely in English.

The story's inventiveness loses steam in the middle, though, as Rinne's showdown with his father turns into a knock-down drag-out fight of the most pedestrian variety. Although still infused with that unmistakable Rumic flair (who can forget a cursed bauble that turns any object into its cash value?), this battle is ultimately two guys flinging magic spells at each other until one of them screws up. The finale in which Rinne outwits his father relies too much on a clunky, contrived setup—something about marriage certificates and a forged thumbprint—and at the same time, Sakura is so busy trying to set things right in her own way that it interferes with achieving a dramatic finish.

Thank goodness, then, for the introduction of Ageha, who despite being a fairly typical "feisty beautiful girl" type is still a refreshing change from drawn-out supernatural warfare. Her reasons for anti-damashigami vigilantism, coupled with Rinne's sketchy family background, guarantee that future chapters will result in conflicts just as hot-blooded as what was seen in this volume. And chances are, some of that may even involve the are-they-or-aren't-they relationship between Rinne and Sakura...

Expect the usual light-pop fare on the soundtrack. The comedy music is surprisingly non-intrusive, letting the action set the mood; there are even some pleasant downtempo arrangements like a mellow acoustic guitar riff and a solo piano version of the theme song (listen for it when Yukinari and Miharu part ways). In its original incarnation, though, the opening theme isn't anything special, and the ending is a similarly bland love song.

Sometimes there are English dubs where the supporting characters are more entertaining than the leads. Liam O'Brien is a riot and a half as Fukuyama in this volume, and his character ought to go terrorize more girls just so we can hear that smarmy delivery. Lulu Chiang is similarly high-spirited in her role as Kirie, playing the uptight foil to Fukuyama. Now if only Yuri Lowenthal and Michelle Ruff—Yukinari and Miharu respectively—could match that energy. Of course, it helps to have some great one-liners too, and the dub script takes several liberties to make those punchlines work. Fukuyama: "Every fiber of your being is crying out for me!" Koyomi: "My fibers don't even know you!" It may not be what they were saying in Japanese, but it's funnier and quirkier.

Unfortunately, the hundred-odd pages prior to that final battle are a clichéd, directionless mess. The arrival in Arkansas comes loaded with dull, prefabricated scenes like "here's lots of nasty villains in a bar" and "a mysterious gunslinger gallantly saves the young lady." Then comes a page-wasting battle between Armor Baron and a throwaway villain—look, if you want to show how strong he is, why not just show it in a battle with the main character? Even Baron vs. one of the sidekicks would do. Speaking of sidekicks, they basically get neglected from about the halfway point in this volume—even going so far as to skip right over the battle scenes and just showing the part where they win. Of course, it's only understandable given that the author suddenly had to wrap things up. Yet even the way he wraps things up turns out clichéd, right down to a gimmicky cameo from a long-gone character.

If the over-the-top battle scenes work so well in this finale, it's likely because Watsuki's bold, blocky art is perfectly suited to it. Intense speedlines, rugged cross-hatching, and explosive special effects all help to capture the adventurous side of the Wild West. But when an artist tries to render everything else in that one style, it just leads to awkwardness. The first few chapters are a classic example of having no idea what to draw when people are standing around talking—no shading, no subtlety, just dull flat lineart. Even the character designs suffer from this— Armor Baron may look awesome in battle, but in any other context he just looks impractical and hilariously overdressed. This ham-handed artistic approach turns out to be a good thing for the layouts, though, as the strong, angular lines make it easy to follow the action from panel to panel.

The cheaply-staged fight scenes do quickly get old, however. The animation so heavily uses common shortcuts in the fights that only a few such scenes have much real sense of motion; the rest are just series of stills of various characters whacking monsters with great flair. The animation actually looks better outside of the fight scenes, though it is never good. The artistry looks cheap enough, especially in the monster designs, Liza's never-looks-right werewolf forearms, and occasional odd body proportioning, that discovering that a studio with as high a reputation as MADHOUSE was responsible for it is shocking. All of the names associated with this endeavor on the artistic front have done much better work elsewhere. Oh, it is hardly a visual disaster, and some might claim that MADHOUSE is just playing to the style of the original manga's artwork, but beyond Hime's design and the opener and closer animation this is not a title that can sell itself on its visuals. Don't expect much of anything for graphic content or more than a tiny bit of fan service, either, as the TV-PG rating is only a little on the light side. Certainly the first half of the series is nowhere near as graphic as the DVD case cover art suggests.

The mediocre artistry does not hinder the soundtrack or Japanese voice acting at all. The actors mostly have fun with their roles, with the key performance being Ayako Kawasumi's nicely reserved interpretation of Hime. Mikiya Katakura, the composer of the Ali Project Duo, fashions a musical score which finds a pleasing balance between creepiness, intensity, and playfulness. Aki Misato performs the appropriately-titled “Blood Queen” for the up-tempo opener, while Ali Project's “Hizamazuite Ashi o Oname” pairs with arguably the series' best visuals in a catchy and stylish closer.

The artwork, chock-full of fine-lined depictions of gorgeous, flowing tresses and exotic, billowing garments, betrays a light, graceful hand—this is what Fushigi Yûgi would look like were it drawn by Satomi Ikezawa (Othello, Guru Guru Pon-chan). Pages are laid out in what has, in the past couple of decades, become the standard, asymmetrical shoujo style. The visual pacing, likewise, has the expected languid, dreamy quality that focuses primarily upon the characters' emotions and interactions. And of course, the heroine has the biggest, most liquid eyes, and the hero the widest, most often augmented shoulders (in this case with a pair of props that look vaguely like antlers).

None of the characters deviate in any fashion from the unexpected, either. We have the well-meaning but foolish Nan-Fan, the placid yet beloved elder brother type (who is actually the princess's elder brother here), the youthfully brash male sidekick, the passive female friend, the dominant and resourceful elder sister type. Impetuous Nurhun in particular seems lifted almost whole cloth from princely analogues found in epic shoujo fantasies like Basara and Red River. Fortunately, thanks to the broad-stroke characterizations and well-considered character designs, all of the members of this large cast of characters are instantly distinguishable from each other. And in manga, this is not always the case, even with a set of one-dimensional personalities.

Shinji is laying in bed, listening to his SDAT walkman again. It's a familiar scene, but it doesn't play today the way it did in 1995. DAT was a high-tech digital cassette that had audio geeks excited back then, but in today's world of iPods it seems laughable and quaint. There have been changes up to this point, of course. Misato seems less guarded than she used to. And Shinji himself has turned into a remarkably proactive, thoughtful young man. Misato can't cook, so he takes it upon himself to cook for the entire household, going so far as to make bento for his entire new extended family (even Rei). He stands up to his father when he's angry. He doesn't even want to run away. He's not scared of the girl(s) that try to bully him. He's closer with Toji and Kensuke (the former of whom is remarkably cooler than before). His kindness is reciprocated; Rei goes to great pains to try to melt the ice between him and his father, and hopes to make him a nice meal as well. Asuka, desperate to make a connection, follows suit.

But once the SDAT hits track 27, we come completely off the rails in this second feature-length installment of Rebuild of Evangelion, the reboot of the mecha series that has inspired never-ending discussion and flame wars between its adoring fans and its firey detractors ever since its release 14 years ago. From this point on, we are deeply in uncharted waters; the rules and ways that dominated the Evangelion we know are gone for good. It seems possible -- probable, even -- that the first installment, which was almost entirely a shot-by-shot remake of the original first few episodes, was a foil meant to lull us into complacency so that this film might shock us that much more when it clubs us in the knees and drags us out back to wail on us for a while.

It hurts so good. In fact, Evangelion 2.0 is as traumatizing to watch as Episode 20 ("Don't rape my mind!") or End of Evangelion. The events of the film are so destructive, it's a miracle that there will even be enough Eva units or enough of Tokyo III left standing to even have another two films in the series. Where the original first half of the TV series had a somewhat monster-of-the-week feel, each battle in 2.0 feels like a desperate fight to the death, and destroying each angel comes dangerously close to being a zero-sum game. Adding to the mystery is a new pilot, a quietly confident girl named Mari, who seems to have no regard for the limits of her own strength or her Eva.

There are moments of great humor, and of great tenderness. Misato's memories of her father play prominently in the hopes she has for Shinji. Rei, having only experienced a life of scientists and test tubes, is shocked and moved by Shinji's kindness towards her. Asuka works up the courage to ask Shinji to be more familiar with her. Gendo and Shinji visit his mother's gravesite. There's a warmness here, a feeling of great affection that wasn't so prevalent in the original, both for the characters and for the world of Tokyo III. Even the SDAT machine, that relic of 90s futurism, now has a special meaning.

But the subtitle of the film is, "You Can (Not) Advance." You can try to aim for a better life. You can destroy yourself putting yourself out there for people you're supposed to love and are supposed to love you back. You can open up to other people, do nice things for them, strive to improve. But in the end, this film is not about happy endings, it's about setbacks. Violent, horrible, rage-inducing setbacks. They are terrifying, they are raw, and they are devastating.

What Evangelion 2.0 brings to the table is far more than a retelling; it features an overarching maturity that was missing in the original. Gone is the hysterical self-loathing, the navel-gazing, the relentless self-defeat in even its narrative structure, and most of the confusing and problematic Judeo-Christian symbolism. (The angels, though familiar looking, aren't even named anymore.) The story that's left is told calmly, with measured pacing and an even-handedness that's unexpected to those familiar with the original. In doing so, it reveals flaws in the original that likely never occured to the viewer initially, but are easy to spot now that they're gone. It's far too early to tell for sure, but at this point it's entirely possible that Rebuild of Evangelion will emerge as the stronger work.

Fans worried that Anno's steadier hand may no longer lead us to dark and horrible places have worried for nothing. He is clearly a more mature man now, so this work features a grounded, deep-seeded anger for the world, for society, for people and their failings that is distinctly new to the franchise, rather than the adolescent angst and self-doubt the original wallowed in. Evangelion 2.0 feels as though the project has been put on mood stabilizers: it's not any happier, but it's more stable and certainly more focused. And in the end, it's a vast improvement. It's no surprise to be attacked by a friend who's a bipolar drama queen. When the grounded, quiet guy snaps, though... THAT'S terrifying.

After the credits finish, a surprise twist (I shan't divulge details) somewhat impairs the film's ultimate impact. But that's fine for now. The teaser for the 3rd film in the series all but ensures an eventual payoff. But god, what a wait this is gonna be...

First seen in Challengers as the dangerously overprotective older brother, Souichi Tatsumi is as anti-gay as ever and he will never let a situation go where he can share his thoughts. Granted his outbursts are mostly belligerently brief ramblings but his passion for hatred is always there and he even does his research to inspire it, such as rambling around the same-sex marriage movements in California. He goes so far out of his way to freak out over the smallest implication at times that even readers who can't see the obvious direction the story is going may still be left hoping he gets broken in just to shut him up. At the same time, it's the same things that make him so funny. He's a jerk alright but it just makes us want to read about him more, see how things go.

Non-consensual sexual acts can never be morally justified but Tyrant plays with the idea coyly even by boys' love standards, making Souichi feel far less a victim than the weeping, submissive types seen in most other stories. It doesn't make it okay but you'd hard pressed to find a fan who doesn't find the immense tug and pull of their ‘relationship’ to be the real engaging part of the story. We don't want to see Souichi get raped but we guiltily don't want to see him stop protesting either.

Quick to give the characters a sharp push forward, a night of drinking leads to Souichi drinking a bottle of some kind of aphrodisiac. While at first it looks like he may be unaffected, soon he's at attention with no sign of abating. And he'll be damned if he deals with it in the same room as Morinaga. But a combination of sympathy and not wanting to let the chance go leads Morinaga to taking long, toying and messy care of Souichi – a fairly lengthy scene that despite some negative connotations shouldn't disappoint any sexual connoisseurs. In the morning all conceptions of Souichi are proven accurate as he awakens with a painful hangover and promptly seeks vengeance against his attacker with a broken wine bottle.

What results however is a surprisingly gut-wrenching emotional hit as Souichi exposes himself truly hurt by the act, assaulted regardless of the situation by someone who he sees as a friend, regardless of what he thought of his sexual preference. Out of guilt, Morinaga prepares to leave the university the two work at together while his subsequent absence wears on Souichi's mind over time. Yes, he's still upset and disturbed over what happened, but he also can't deny the hole that's left by Morinaga not being there, both in regards to their work and as an acquaintance. He becomes increasingly frustrated by Morinaga's decision to run away over facing what he did, while even beginning to fear that Souichi may've exacted vengeance on himself and taken his own life when no one seems to know where he is.

The first volume is hardly all about that, though. Nanase also must use her telepathy to extricate herself from a very dangerous situation with a defamed former teacher and accidentally uses it to pick up on the prediction experienced by the precognitive young man, but the meat of the story comes in her encounter and bonding with the young boy, the first person she's ever run across who has an ability like hers. The telepathy may be the gimmick, but it's the human relationships which drive the story.

Telepathic Wanderers is the first manga writing effort for renowned Japanese sci-fi writer Yasutaka Tsutsui, who is pitched as “Japan's Issac Asimov” but may be better-known to diehard anime fans as the original writer of the novels on which Satoshi Kon's upcoming project Paprika is based. Although a little too emphatic at times and occasionally prone to melodrama, the writing tells a solid story with credible dialogue and character behavior. It does not in any sense have the look or feel of a sci-fi story, which is a credit to Mr. Tsutsui's talent.

A straightforward script also helps to keep the adventure from getting bogged down in details: these characters usually say exactly what they mean, with few ambiguities or sentence fragments in the dialogue. Even moments that could have resulted in extreme verbal indulgence—like the flashbacks of Erza's childhood—carefully avoid the temptation by letting the action speak for itself. Because the dialogue is so direct, and because it's set in a fantasy world, the idea of having a glossary in this volume seems like a pointless embellishment, but there it is anyway, mostly to explain certain quirks of the Japanese language that sneak into the writing. This translation also leaves the sound effects in their original Japanese format, with small English translations alongside them that don't intrude too much on the artwork.

The good news about this volume of Fairy Tail is that it continues to deliver what the series is best known for: flashy, fast-paced battles, myriad displays of magic, and a pure spirit of heroism where good triumphs over evil (or, in the case of low-level opponents, where good triumphs over incompetent). Unfortunately, those aspects also happen to be the bad news about Fairy Tail: it adheres too slavishly to the rules of the genre, it practically telegraphs each of the major plot developments as Erza is taken away and her friends come racing to save her, and every battle or turning point is exactly where you would expect it to be. For all its fancy wizardry, idiosyncratic characters, and far-off adventuring, this series still carries a heavy whiff of the tried-and-true, the overdone, the familiar. But you know what? Everyone's going to stick around to see how Erza's final battle will turn out anyway. Just watch.

You can think of Air Master as a huge anime blender filled with whacked humor and action, set to liquefy. It looks and feels like chaos, and entertains like the love child of Mohammed Ali and Jerry Lewis. Renge, strange little creature that she is, often rubs raw nerves, and the emotions are blown so far over the top that they can easily trigger the snark alarms in viewers' heads, but by god knows what alchemy, in context it all dovetails nicely. The bad, the good, the overblown. The stupid and the even stupider, the goofy and the merciless, the lazy and the virtuosic. So nicely, in fact, that it's a bit of a shock to see it completely self-destruct in the final two episodes. But by then the damage is done. No lapse into bombastic fantasy-fu can erase the hours of runaway fun that preceded it.

Do not ask yourself what business a parallel universe fantasy about a bishounen whose touch causes plants to grow has been titled Silver Diamond. It just spoils the fun. And Shiho Sugiura, who made her debut in 1994 with the boutique publisher Tousuisha, certainly knows that girls (and women) who are passionately devoted to her fantasy-laced tales of boys with ambiguous feelings for each other just want to have fun.

And as long as you do not take the plot premise of Silver Diamond too seriously, that is exactly what this epic, ongoing manga series is: fun. And lots of it. The story begins innocuously enough, with Rakan, a pretty boy and his big bouquets of flowers that he passes around every day at school. He seems awfully privileged and independent for a high schooler; all of his relatives are dead, but he has been bequeathed with a considerable inheritance, so he lives by himself in a nice house and cooks his own meals.

To reduce the content in this volume to its base elements would be to sell it short, however, as its writing offers so much more. Highlights include episode 12's startling secret behind the tension between Alty and Kaim (and especially Aer's reaction to learning about it), Neviril's examination of some unpleasant truths about herself in episodes 13 and 14, Waporif's struggles to sort out the intersections of romance, practicality, and religion in episodes 15 and 16, and the mystery of what exactly Dominūra sees in episode 15. Aer fascinates as the kind of inspirationally bold, strong-to-the-point-of-insensitive personality normally embodied in male characters, one who also has an always forward-looking focus and the maturity level of a child when it comes to her understanding of love and propriety. In fact, behavior that both subtly and not-so-subtly suggests of childlike qualities in various sybillae, with the implication being that they are not truly mature until they have gone to The Spring for their gender determination, is a recurring theme throughout this volume. These episodes also raise one mystery dating back to episode 1 that viewers may not have ever realized was a mystery: what, exactly, really did happen to Amuria, the Pair of Neviril who was lost attempting to perform the Emerald Ri Mājon? Everything is tied together with a delicate balancing act of timing and characterizations so involving that the dearth of action through the middle episodes may not even be noticed.

Goto, Noa, and the rest of Special Vehicles Section 2 are barely in it, but what serious Patlabor fan could pass up this three-disc “Ultimate Edition” of the newest movie in the series, “WXIII” (Full title: Patlabor: The Movie 3: Wasted 13)? Though a “Patlabor” film in little more than name only, it does tout the most impressive Ingram animation you'll likely ever see. The Supplemental Features disc explores the history of the film and its place in the Patlabor universe, which necessitates a lengthy look back at the manga, video, television, and movie series that are loved so well. And required viewing for any fan are the MiniPato short films, starring some old pals and written by the man himself, Mamoru Oshii.

The main attraction, WXIII, is ironically the least enticing part of the package. Many fans of the series will be let down by the marginal use of the regular cast, yet the film utilizes too much of the established Patlabor universe to be accessible to uninitiated viewers. Taking center stage are two new characters, detectives assigned to solve several fatal attacks on labor pilots near the Tokyo waterfront. Elderly Kusumi and his young protégé Hata are vaguely defined personalities that stand in sharp contrast to Goto and his team, who are among the most fully-realized anime characters in history. Stoic Kusumi and Hata never express enough emotion to make either of them very interesting, and Hata's relationship with the equally emotionless Saeko is likewise devoid of any real feeling. However, when Goto makes one of his all-too-brief appearances, things immediately spring to life. The conspiracy surrounding the Wasted 13 and the shocking truth behind its creation do make for an effective mix of mystery and horror, but a previous knowledge of the Patlabor world is required to fully appreciate what is going on, and if you've seen any other Patlabor anime then you know this is not the series at its best.

WXIII is not a terrible film; it's just that the shortcomings are much more noticeable because of its distinguished ancestry. One can hardly blame it for not being able to live up to the first two movies, and the filmmakers don't try to compete, rightly conceiving the picture as a side-story to the main series. Still, Mamoru Oshii's ingenious, complex storytelling is sorely missed. WXIII is basically a sophisticated Godzilla movie, and a pretty straightforward one at that. Instead of the first movie's suspenseful race against time or the second film's brilliant anticlimax, WXXIII ends with a predictable battle between the monster and SVU2's Ingrams.

But it's a battle that will make Patlabor and animation fans in general drool. Animation studio MADHOUSE brings their renowned technical skill to the Patlabor franchise, and the result is the finest-looking installment of the entire series. Comparing the limited animation of the original OVA series to the incredibly lifelike showdown between the Wasted 13, Noa and Ota gives an idea of just how far this series has come. The character animation is likewise beautiful, and designer Hiroki Takagi updates Akemi Takada's classic characters while retaining much of their original look. The gorgeous art and animation coupled with the simple yet competent story make WXIII a worthy appendix to the Patlabor series, if not a worthy successor.

If WXIII is not a good as the other films, why then would a hardcore Patlabor fan want to shell out the extra dough for this box set? One-and-a-half words: MiniPato. Only available as part of the Ultimate Edition, these three theatrical short cartoons bring the real Patlabor stars back one last time, albeit in quite a different manner. Goto, Nagumo, and the rest have become super-deformed CGI puppets, and each of the shorts is a self-referential “instructional video” that gleefully shreds apart the Patlabor mythos. Goto talks at length about just how stupid the concept of a “Revolver Cannon” really is, Shige speculates on ways to sell more “Patlabor” merchandise by making the Ingrams transform, and Nagumo reveals the ludicrous truth behind Special Vehicles' mysterious source of income. MiniPato is one big in-joke, but folks in the know will find it hilarious, and it represents the first time Mamoru Oshii has written comedy since the Patlabor TV series ended over a decade ago. The final MiniPato short is strongly reminiscent of his classic TV script “The Destruction of Special Vehicles Section 2”, and is a reminder of just how funny the serious-minded Oshii can be.

MiniPato was brought to life using a unique new form of animation conceived by Oshii, christened “3D CG Flip-Flop Animation.” Paper cutout puppets were filmed against a black background, then scanned into a computer where they were digitally painted, composited, and animated. The finished product is pretty surreal but looks great, and one hopes that Production I.G will produce more “Flip Flop” animation in the future. The whole process is documented in a half-hour documentary included on the MiniPato disc that is just as long as the shorts themselves, and includes a fun look at the faces behind some familiar voices.

Kenji Kawai has scored every Patlabor animation since the original video series, and WXIII and MiniPato are no exceptions. MiniPato's bouncy, lighthearted music harks back to Kawai's early days working on such animated comedies as the Patlabor TV series and Ranma ½, while WXIII's eerie, minimalist score is in the vein of his more recent work on political thrillers like Ghost in the Shell. Kawai talks about creating the music for two such drastically different films in the supplemental features included on disc three. He even performs much of it himself, proving he is one of the most versatile musicians currently working in the anime industry.

Kawai, Oshii, director Fumihiko Takayama and many others are all interviewed in the multiple documentaries included on the third disc in the set. The “All About Patlabor” program focuses on WXIII, but covers the entire franchise and is a fascinating history lesson for anyone with an interest in the series. “Behind WXIII” delves into the making of the new film, with an emphasis on adapting the story from Masami Yuuki's original Patlabor manga. “Meet the Cast” is just that, but also takes a cool peek at some of the recording sessions for the movie. Potentially the coolest extra is the layout gallery, which features virtually every layout drawing from the movie and runs at a breezy 54 minutes. Accompanying the gallery is a broadcast of the “Say Young 21” radio show, guest starring the original Patlabor vocal cast. But there are no subtitles available for the program, and us gaijin can only guess at what Noa, Asuma, and friends are talking about. Why include this feature if you're not going to translate it?

ADV's English script rewords some parts by making the dialogue sharper and/or simplifying details; “three hots and a cot” replaces a more verbose line about what a former soldier misses about his military service, for instance. Only in the Next Episode previews can wholesale changes be found, however. Viewers not obsessed with original Japanese dubs should find a lot to like in the English performances; Adam Dudley hits exactly the right note as Oland, and Kaytha Coker uses a voice that could be mistaken for Colleen Clinkenbeard to capture Alice's forceful tones reasonably well. Other performances, especially relative newcomer Monica Passley as Stecchin, also sound right for their respective roles. Given the German naming conventions, attempts at German accents abound.

Extras on this volume include only clean opener and closer, although it does sport some of the best cover art of any release yet this year.

Gonzo, who co-produced this one with AIC, pulls out its “A” team for this job, with impressive results. If the series can move away from some of its early foibles then it offers a lot of promise.

Staying true to form, Pioneer maintains the same level of quality for the last DVD in the series. While not anamorphic, the DVD is presented in widescreen format, retaining the original aspect of the series. The extras feature the standard array of textless openings, with each different opening for each episode intact as well as two cover galleries featuring characters and mecha. There is also the textless ending rounding out the extras.

The animation for Vandread remains solid through these last three episodes. Featuring some of the most elaborate action sequences of the series, each episode remains high in quality with strong, consistent animation. The action sequences, the space battles in particular, are top-notch - especially considering the fluid mix of CGI and traditional animation. The battles are of an epic-scale, with a constant flow of enemy and ally ships alike filling the screen with movement and color. Impressive for television animation, the CGI rivals that of many big blockbuster movies, definitely going that extra mile to make Vandread one of the finest examples of CGI usage.

Fitting well with the animation and action, the soundtrack remains consistent with the previous releases. Both casts have settled into their roles, with strong performances in both the Japanese and English soundtracks. A large number of new side characters presents the only real negative; as many of their voices sound re-used. The music and sound effects both do a good job of pushing the drama and help build emotion for all of the climatic moments featured in the three episodes.

Starting with some rather clichéd genres, Vandread has managed to build a unique story over the last twenty-six episodes. Marking the series is a set of revelations and some risk-taking that build solid drama into the story. The first major push comes at the end of the first series, when the identity of the strange aliens is finally revealed. The Second Stage begins with yet another major revelation into the identity of the aliens, and leads into a period of strong growth for many of the major characters. The series even pushes the envelope by killing one of the major supporting cast members, pushing the character development even farther. With such a frantic pace building from the last volume, it's actually a major surprise that volume four not only keeps up with that set pace, but manages to tie up all the loose ends created over the entire series.

While the outcome of the final battle was never in doubt, how the characters reach that point shows an impressive amount of character development. There are actually quite a few things that viewers can find themselves relating to as the characters sermonize about got to where they are at the end of the series. It does get a bit wordy, but the action from the battle scenes more than make up for some of the preaching. In the end, it's the growth of all the major players that make Vandread a solid drama and well worth the build-up to the final battle.

Final Assault continues on the frantic pace set forth by the previous volume. Leaving no stone unturned, the final answers to all the questions are disclosed, and in dramatic fashion, Vandread reaches its conclusion. The final episodes of this series are filled with exciting battle sequences, a strong moral and much of the same charm and wit that makes Vandread a fine mix of so many different genres. While there is room for future adventures, this chapter in the lives of the crew of the Nirvana comes to a satisfying conclusion that should make even the hard-hearted amongst the viewers happy for the journey.

Gatekeepers: Open the Gate is the first volume of this series being released by Pioneer. With animation done by Gonzo and character designs by Keiji Goto, Gatekeepers combines James Bond flair with super-powered high school students. Volume 1 contains episodes 1 – 3 giving a good introduction to the world of the Gatekeepers and the main heroes, Shun and Ruriko.

Animation for Gatekeepers is highly detailed and consistent. Character designs were done by Keiji Goto, so each of the characters have the big round eyes his style is known for. Focusing around super powered high school kids, the costumes consist of the familiar school uniforms (aka sailor uniforms). Character interaction and development centers around the school, so that environment is pretty standard and familiar. The secret government organization plot brings in a lot of mecha and gadgets familiar to the spy game genre. Creating a show in the 90s could lead the designers to fit in more futuristic mecha, but they do a good job of sticking with the high tech creations of the late 60s. Buses that transform into armored carriers and sports cars with an unlimited amount of gadgetry fit in well in 1969. Being animated by Gonzo, there is a smattering of CGI affects, but they don't distract from the appeal of the cel animation.

Being a Pioneer release, the standard, stable voice actors are present. All the voices seem well matched to the characters, with no awkwardness. The English dub stays pretty close the Japanese without adding or taking away any dialogue. Most changes made to the script seem strictly for timing purposes. Both the Japanese and English casts do a good job of bringing life to the characters they voice.

The extras for the DVD version are the standard fare: Non-credit opening and closing, scene access, special prologue and ending as well as a collection of TV spots. Early editions of the release also contain a set of Aegis ID cards, one for Ruriko and the other a blank that viewers could use to become an agent of Aegis. (A bit cheesy, but it is nice to see something other than the standard insert with chapter listings.)

FUNimation has done an exceptional job casting the series so far. Though the vocal talent may not always be a great match for the original Japanese casting, even the most minor roles sound exactly right in English. The performances themselves also consistently hit the right notes, although ardent sub fans may be bothered by a speech mannerism sometimes evident in Jamie Marchi's opening narration and rendition of Masane that has no parallel in the Japanese performance. She also takes a more sexualized approach to the Witchblade-influenced voice, whereas Ms. Noto aims for a more bestial effect with the heavy breathing in those scenes. Neither approach is exactly wrong, but the former seems more congruous with the overall tone. The biggest scripting differences can be found in the opening narration, but otherwise the English script stays remarkably tight by FUNi standards.

As per the original comic, Witchblade is a title aimed squarely at more mature audiences. By turning internal conflicts and motivations into external ones, and focusing more on Masane's maternal drives than Sara Pezzini's ruminations about justice, it adds enough of a fresh twist to the franchise to distinguish itself from previous incarnations without straying so far that it offends established fans. As a stand-alone work its Masane/Rihoko dynamic differentiates it enough from other similar series to make it stand out amongst its anime peers. It may not be a top-quality work, but this Gonzo spin on Top Cow's dark, violent, sexy comic about a mystic weapon wieldable only by women has gotten off to a good start.

The biggest fault with Baldr Force EXE is not among the ones it initially looks like it might have: at four half-hour OVA episodes, it is too short by at least half. Despite a shaky start and giving an early impression that it is merely ripping off every other cyberpunk anime series ever made, it quickly starts to gel into its own entity and throw out some surprisingly good and involving content. The limitation of the time frame cramp the plot, however, forcing events to progress unnaturally quickly and denying it key background, setting, and character development that could have elevated it into the range of a great sci-fi anime. As is, it still fares pretty well.

First and foremost, don't trust the synopsis on the back cover. While it does outline roughly what happens in the volume, the actual reading of it is totally different than what you would think based on that summary. Lena does indeed fall in love with her half-brother, but the back cover leads you to believe she runs away because of it, when in reality she runs away because people are trying to kill her. There is quite a big difference between those two stories. The cover synopsis also promises that Lena travels to a new world after running away; this first volume doesn't actually get to that. Other than a flashback in the beginning, and a short, rather confusing break to it in the middle, we don't actually get to visit whatever that place is in volume one.

It seems that the main story of this series isn't actually about the world the characters live in through this volume, so Eun-Young Lee doesn't have a huge ethical problem absolutely obliterating Lena's life in this world. That makes chapter three really fast paced and exciting, but you have to read through two rather mundane chapters to get to it.

The music is the draw, not more so than the humor, but because by-and-large it is the humor. Or at least the best of the humor. There's plenty of humor outside of the music, much of it Shinichi Watanabe-style. Silly word-play and bodily function jokes abound, sexual innuendo proliferates, and a panda rear-grabbing stretches out ad infinitum. But the music is the true comedic core. Much of it is the songs themselves: backed by music that borders on TV-jingle levels of addictiveness (without their reductive simplicity) and poisoned with a biting sarcasm and acid cynicism that's at odds with their bubblegum bounce (and slinky sexuality), they are often hilarious in their own right. Some of it is the visuals: the Brothers dancing one of their signature numbers with their missing member replaced by a cardboard cutout, Mako singing and dancing a sorrowful requiem all while strapped arm-and-leg to a hospital mattress. And often it is simply the sight of people expressing themselves through song: Two men pretending to be gay? Eh, whatever. Two men singing about their fake gay relationship (complete with sappy love song clichés and sparkly effects)? Comedy gold. Not all of the songs succeed of course—the Gadget Detective's songs simply don't measure up to the likes of the Pops Song or the Ode to Dom Perignon—but they do so regularly enough to make it a genuine musical treat.

Episode 1 to get advance TV showing in Tokyo this Sunday

The first Blu-ray Disc and DVD volumes for the Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~ television anime sequel series will ship in Japan on August 25 with an unaired "0th episode." The second season based on Sakurako Gokurakuin's Sekirei magical romantic comedy manga will officially premiere in Japan on July 4, although the first television episode, "Shizuka Naru Yochō," will get an advance broadcast in Tokyo this Sunday.

The first BD/DVD volumes will contain the unaired 0th episode, "Kanwanidai (Sekirei Shindan/Sekirei Yoka)," and the "Shizuka Naru Yochō" television episode. The limited edition of the first volumes will also bundle an original soundtrack CD with Hiroaki Sano's music and a solo version of the "Hakuyoku no Seiyaku" theme song by the character Musubi.

A separate "Hakuyoku no Seiyaku" CD single will ship on July 21, and the limited first edition of that CD will bundle a DVD with a special trailer for the unaired 0th episode. The DVD will also include the opening and ending animation footage from the second season without the text credits on top.

Since premiering in 1998, Cowboy Bebop has quickly become one of the most popular and respected anime titles in history. Blending futuristic sci-fi with an urban retro-1970s feel, Bebop is a unique television show which skillfully transcends all kinds of genres. Episodes vary drastically in tone, from cartoonish farce to dramatic tragedy and everything in between. It's all held together by some of the most endearing characters to ever grace an anime, along with movie-quality animation, sophisticated writing, and an incredible pop score by the great Yoko Kanno. One of Bebop's commercial bumpers proclaims it, a bit pretentiously, "the work which will become a new genre in itself". It's right: Cowboy Bebop is unlike anything you've ever seen before. "The Perfect Sessions" collects all 26 episodes of this landmark anime series, along with a CD of some of the excellent music that puts the "Bebop" in Cowboy Bebop.

Cowboy Bebop is a series that fairly oozes style, which is a very hard-to-define element. There's just something undeniably cool about it. Perhaps it's the exotic-yet-familiar vision of a future in which space-age technology coexists with more everyday items like ceiling fans and automobiles (in this aspect, Cowboy Bebop is reminiscent of the old Dirty Pair television series). It could be the back-ally jazz compositions that punctuate the action, or the main character Spike's laid-back, cavalier attitude towards life. But whatever it is, Cowboy Bebop has it in doses. You'll be hard pressed to find an anime with more panache.

The characters are so convincingly portrayed that the show could have been successful without any of the afore-mentioned style. Spike's character in particular runs the gamut from goofy to blasé' to teeth-gnashing tough; he is one of most three-dimensional anime leads in recent memory. Jet may seem like a no-nonsense heavy but he's actually a concerned father-figure for the rest of the crew, and Faye's sultry tough-girl act covers up a very insecure individual. Only the 13-year-old female hacker Ed is given a one-sided persona, but her oddball mirth is presented so vividly it's easy to accept her as a genuine personality as well. These strong characterizations help carry the series through some predictable storylines that might otherwise be pretty dull.

The series is episodic in nature, each episode (or "session") tells a self-contained story that often has no bearing on the others. Many of the plots are taken straight from the pages of old pulp-fiction novels or classic American cop shows. The show relies on it's unique interpretation of these familiar cliché's to give it a fresh spin. There is very little "point" to the series than to entertain it's audience, which it consistently does.

One of the few recurring themes of Cowboy Bebop is that your past has a way of catching up with you. Spike has left his life of crime, but still relentlessly seeks his old mob flame Julia. Instead he usually winds up running into Vicious, his former superior in the Red Dragon Mafia who wants him dead for leaving the syndicate.....or is it because of Julia? Jet wants nothing at all to do with his own past, which only holds painful memories of a lost love and a lost left arm, yet events surrounding his old misfortunes come back to haunt him. Faye, conversely, is an amnesiac who his actively seeking the answers to her missing past. When she finally regains her memory, the truth turns out to be very bittersweet. Even carefree Ed is faced with her troubled past when her neglectful father reappears late in the series. These serious moments are at odds with the gritty-yet-lighthearted tone found in the majority of the series, and yet there is no feeling of inconsistency in the show's varying attitudes. Cowboy Bebop makes no attempt to hide it is inspired by the musical format of the Blues (The show's closing theme is "The Real Folk Blues"), and most good Blues melodies manage to be jazzy while at the same time a little somber. Cowboy Bebop is, in a way, a physical manifestation of the Blues.

The usual J-pop soundtrack would not suit such a project well, and the Bebop staff rightly sought an American jazz sound to accompany their work. Yoko Kanno had proven her talent by creating memorable orchestral scores for anime like Macross Plus and Escaflowne, and with Cowboy Bebop she shows a remarkable musical versatility. Her instrumental pieces for Bebop outrank many a Hollywood film's, and the many songs (almost all in English) that are peppered throughout the series could certainly be top-40 hits on American radio, particularly "Call Me Call Me" and "Want it all Back". Kanno's music is vital to achieving the eclectic mood Bebop strives for, and oftentimes the music takes precedence over the action or the characters.

The amazing musical score complements a high quality of animation seldom seen on television. Character movements are much fuller than that of a standard TV anime. Character Designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, who previously had worked on the Gundam series 08th MS Team, has a very appealing yet simple style that is easier to animate than the more complex designs found in other anime. The animation of the various vehicles featured in Bebop is also of very high merit, and is made more impressive by the fact that much of it was done traditionally, without the aid of computers. The CG that is present in Bebop blends very well for a series done in 1998. Though not as seamless as the merger of old and new techniques in recent productions like Vampire Hunter D or even the Cowboy Bebop movie, it is a far sight better than earlier attempts at mixing computer and hand animation, as in Blue Submarine #6.

Much has been made of Cowboy Bebop's English dub, and rightly so. All too often the inclination in voice-over work is to caricature the voice, make it "cartoonish" and unnatural. There are frequently times where this is of course the appropriate method, but many anime tell sophisticated stories that require a more realistic approach. Several serious anime have been belittled by their English dubs that feature hammy, over-the-top voice acting. Cowboy Bebop is to be commended for boasting a flawless English cast which plays it straight and low-down. Even the cartoony Ed, whom the directors easily could have given an equally cartoony voice, sounds like a sincere 13-year-old girl...albeit a very oddball one. The English cast is so convincing, in fact, they actually one-up the Japanese originals. Wendee Lee in particular is to be commended for besting the great Megumi Hayashibara as Faye.

"The Perfect Sessions" collects all 6 DVD volumes of Bebop in a snazzy box that's as cool as the show inside. The main cast is featured in a gold-tone portrait on the front, and a little picture of Ein graces the back corner. Inside is a sampling of Bebop tunes on CD. It showcases some of the best tracks from the first part of the series but regrettably leaves out some great compositions from the latter episodes, such as the aforementioned "Call Me" and "Blue".

I've never met an anime fan who didn't like Cowboy Bebop, and I know many non-anime fans who admire it as well. Like the best works of film, it has a universal appeal that transcends cultures and personal tastes. It is an anime that will be remembered long after many others have been forgotten.

Tamers will be able to reach “Robust Tamer” level 100 and train their Digimon up to level 99. Tamers will also have new reason to track down and capture field Digimon with the release of new captured Digimon, including Pagumon, Minomon, Poromon and Upamon. The Field Map and Dungeon Map will both be unlocked, allowing Tamers to explore the new Wind Valley and Sky Dungeon areas and face new enemies like Megadramon and MetalEtemon. Also, the new Card Digivolution system will give players a new way to upgrade their Digimon partners. Fans will be able to enhance their battle skills by purchasing new items from the Digishop, including two new partner Digimon, Agumon and Monodramon, 5 new capturing nets and Premium Packages that include Gold Drills, Excaliburs, White Wings and Deva Auras.

WeMade will be hosting a two-week series of special events to celebrate the latest update. From May 19 through June 2, players will race level up their Tamer characters to the new Robust Tamer grade for a chance to win prizes. Players will also compete to digivolve five of their captured Digimon to the Mega stage for even more rewards. Finally, to celebrate the opening of the new Field Map, a Mystery Box filled with surprise loot will randomly drop in the new Sky Dungeon at a higher rate than in other maps throughout the one-week period.
